Shires Company, a leading manufacturer of professional brass instruments, is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Instrument Finisher & Surface Preparation Technician to join our production team. This hands-on role is responsible for preparing brass instrument components for final lacquer finishing. The position combines buffing, polishing, and precision cleaning processes to ensure each instrument meets the company’s high standards before entering the lacquer stage.

Responsibilities

Finishing & Buffing

  • Buff, polish, and finish brass, nickel, and steel instrument components  

  • Operate buffing wheels, polishing tools, and related finishing equipment  

  • Remove scratches, oxidation, and surface imperfections to meet cosmetic standards  

  • Maintain proper handling techniques to avoid damaging delicate components  

Surface Preparation & Cleaning

  • Perform detailed cleaning of parts after buffing to remove compounds and contaminants  

  • Prepare instrument components for lacquer finishing using approved cleaning methods  

  • Inspect surfaces to ensure parts meet finishing standards before entering the lacquer process  

  • Handle parts carefully to prevent fingerprints, oils, or contamination prior to coating  

Assembly & Production Support

  • Assist with basic component assembly using hand tools and light machinery  

  • Perform light soldering or brazing tasks when required (training provided)  

  • Follow standard work instructions and quality procedures  

Quality & Workplace Standards

  • Inspect parts throughout the finishing process to ensure quality expectations are met  

  • Maintain clean, organized workstations and support 5S practices  

  • Follow safety procedures and wear required PPE (safety glasses, gloves, face shields)  

  • Meet daily production, quality, and attendance expectations  

  • Support team improvement initiatives and problem-solving efforts  

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Experience in manufacturing, polishing, buffing, metal finishing, or general labor preferred

  • Strong attention to detail and pride in craftsmanship

  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment

  • Reliable attendance and positive team attitude
